Accessibility

We want as many people as possible to be able to use our platforms.

We are committed to making this platform accessible to as many users as possible.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use our platform.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts with their browser extensions.
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen.
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard.
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software.
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We’ve also made the text as simple as possible to understand, and encourage platform admins to do the same when adding content.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Text to speech

We do not provide a built-in text to speech player but this platform has been coded to support screen reading software. Visit AbilityNet for more information.

How accessible this platform is

Specific acessibility considerations when using the platform:

  • some of the helper tooltips need a larger clickable area. We’re working through these.
  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text without a browser extension.
  • we’re working through platform guides to make them more accessible, including transcripts.

Technical information about this platform’s accessibility

Made Open is committed to making its platform accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This platform is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Line spacing is not 2 times the size of the font. We currently have it set at 1.5 times. During user testing this was not an issue.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

As part of our development process we have added checks to ensure accessibility standards have been adhered to.

As mentioned in the “How accessible this website is” section above, we are working through the remaining tooltips to increase the clickable area.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 10th October 2022. It was last reviewed on 26th October 2022.

Our platform was last tested on 10th October 2022. The test was carried out by Geoff Muskett from Made Open Communications Ltd.

We used this approach to deciding on a sample of pages to test: testing pages involving the typical flow from registration to volunteering to an activity.

You can read the full accessibility test report on our WCAG status table.
